London, Midland & Scottish

The London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) came into existence at the Grouping in 1923, being the largest of the ‘Big Four’ railway companies. Company lines extended from London to the Midlands, North West, Wales and Scotland, in addition to operations in Northern Ireland.  These lines included the West Coast Main Line, the Midland Main Line and the Somerset & Dorset (S&DR).  Major constituent companies included the Midland Railway (MR), London & North Western Railway (LNWR), Caledonian Railway (CR) and the Highland Railway (HR).

During the 1930’s the LMS competed with the LNER in offering streamlined express passenger services between London and Scotland such as the Coronation Scot.  It also operated other premium services such as the Irish Mail, Thames-Clyde Express and Pines Express.  

Locomotives, carriages and wagons were produced from company workshops, primarily Crewe, Derby and St. Rollox.  The Royal Scot and Patriot classes of 4-6-0 locomotives were produced from 1927 and the period of William Stanier as Chief Mechanical Engineer from 1932 to 1944 saw the 4-6-2 Pacific Princess Coronation and Princess Royal classes, as well as the 4-6-0 Jubilees and Black Fives. 

On nationalisation in 1948, the company became part of the new British Railways (BR).
