The London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) was created as one of the ‘Big Four’ companies at the 1923 Grouping. Geographically it covered lines to the east of Great Britain, including the East Coast Main Line, with the highest route mileage of the four companies. The major constituent companies were the Great Northern Railway (GNR), Great Eastern Railway (GER), North Eastern Railway (NER), Great Central Railway (GCR), North British Railway (NBR), Great North of Scotland Railway (GNSR) and the Hull & Barnsley Railway.
Under the direction of its Chief Mechanical Engineers, Sir Nigel Gresley, Edward Thompson and Arthur Peppercorn the company produced some of the classic locomotive designs. These included the A3 and A4 Pacific 4-6-2 passenger tender locomotives, of which the A4 4468 ‘Mallard’ achieved the world record as the fastest steam locomotive in July 1938. During the 1930’s these streamlined engines hauled famous titled trains such as ‘Silver Jubilee’ and ‘Coronation’.
The company ceased to exist on nationalisation of the railways and formation of British Railways (BR) in 1948.
